Basically, Letters to Celebrites was inspired by a desire to help Whitney Houston. She had just been beaten up by her ever-so-slightly-jealous-of-her-talent has-been stripper-humping coke-addled husband, Bobby Brown. In an effort to intervene and encourage her to seek help, Merrill began a letter-writing campaign on his blog, and soon enough, nothing came of it at all. Upon reading this letter, Elana and Skye realized that there are a lot of famous people out there who need our attention. Thus, the site was born.
Letters to Celebrities opened with a letter to the inventor of the internet, Al Gore. The original letter to Whitney Houston can be seen here.
